Spherical graphite uses high-quality high-carbon graphite as raw material, and adopts advanced processing technology to modify the graphite surface to produce graphite products with different fineness and ellipsoidal shape. Its production process is mainly as follows: in the production process of spherical graphite, the natural flake graphite powder is first crushed into a suitable particle size, and then it is processed by de-angularization to finally form an ellipsoid or similar spherical shape. At the same time, the spherical particles are separated from the fine powder peeled off during the de-angularization process by a grading device, and spherical graphite with a normal distribution can be obtained. Artificial graphite can also be used to carry out the above process. The degree of spheroidization of artificial graphite is more uniform, and it performs better in practical applications.

Spherical graphite has the properties of low porosity, good oxidation resistance, uniform and delicate structure, small void defects, moderate elasticity, and easy molding. It is an important part of the negative electrode material of lithium-ion batteries.


The main index to measure the quality of spherical graphite used in lithium battery anode materials:

1)the physical performance indicators: including particle size (D50, μm), tap density (g/cm3), specific surface area (m2/g), moisture (%), fixed carbon (%)

2) the electrochemical performance indicators: Coulombic efficiency (%), charge capacity (mAh/g), cycle life (cycles)

Remarks: The product code of spherical graphite is composed of product name, grade code, median diameter, fixed carbon content and tap density in sequence, that is, SG-grade code-D50-fixed carbon content-tap density. Example SG I-17-9995-95 refers to SG spherical graphite, grade I, D50=(17.0m±2.0m), fixed carbon content ≥99.95%, tap density ≥0.95g/cm.


During the processing of spherical graphite, the higher the carbon content of the raw material, the higher the cost. However, if the carbon content of the raw material is too low, the number of spherical graphite purification processes will increase, the degree of equipment wear will increase, and the total cost will also increase. According to the accumulation of experiments, raw materials with a carbon content of 95-96% have the most economical overall cost. There are also requirements for the particle size of raw materials during the processing of spherical graphite. Too thick will cost more, and too fine will affect the output rate of spherical graphite. Too many auxiliary materials will also increase the cost of raw materials. Studies have shown that the use of raw materials with a particle size of 100 mesh is the most suitable for the production of spherical graphite.

Spherical graphite can be used as a catalyst carrier for the preparation and application of catalysts. Spherical graphite has high specific surface area and porosity, which can improve the activity and selectivity of the catalyst, and its chemical stability can also improve the stability and life of the catalyst. Spherical graphite catalysts can be used in environmental protection, chemical synthesis, energy conversion and other fields.

Spherical graphite can be used as a reinforcing agent for high-strength composite materials to prepare high-performance composite materials. Spherical graphite has the characteristics of high strength, high stiffness and low density, which can improve the mechanical properties and durability of composite materials. Spherical graphite composite materials can be used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, sports equipment and other fields.

Spherical graphite can be used as a raw material for conductive coatings to prepare high-performance conductive coatings. Spherical graphite has the characteristics of high conductivity and chemical stability, which can improve the conductivity and durability of conductive coatings. Conductive coatings can be used in electronic devices, solar cells, coating anti-corrosion and other fields.

Spheroidized graphite can be used for micropore-making in the ceramic industry, and microporous ceramic filter elements can be used for water purification, gas adsorption, and building temperature-regulating materials.
